How do you know if you need a coach or a counsellor? What’s the difference? As both a qualified coach and counsellor I can say that there are some similarities and also some differences that I’m going to talk about below; Coaching Vs Counselling. You can learn more about me over here.
The word ‘coach’ seems to be thrown around very loosely these days and for some reason the word coach always has me singing this song because even today I relate the word ‘coach’ to some sort of physical activity!
Anyone can become a coach of some sort and there are the coach’s out there covering many different niches. For example, if you’re wanting to improve as an employer or as an employee or you’re stuck in regards to building your solopreneur business, you can hire a business coach. If you’re struggling health-wise you can hire a health and wellness coach. If you’re struggling with finances and debt you can hire a money or finance coach. If you want to take up running and you want to train for an upcoming race you can hire a running coach. Want to completely change careers? Go get yourself a career coach. I could go on and on.
There seems to be a coach for every struggle that we face, which is great. In my experience, this is because a coach has enured the problem that you are facing, and managed to overcome it themselves and now wants to help others do the same. That is why I chose to qualify as a life coach who works specifically with women and mothers around their personal-development and self-improvement, amongst other things.
Coaching can be done individually, within businesses and large organisations and alongside training and mentoring. The coaching agreement is pretty relaxed and the sessions often don’t happen in a formal setting.
Counselling is a way of assisting you to identify and define your emotional issues and to help you better understand yourself. As a counsellor, I believe that my clients have the desire and the capacity to grow towards fulfilling their true potential and that they are the experts on their own lives.
Therefore, I don’t generally give advice. I will work with you to help you understand yourself more fully and to find your inner resources. With greater self-awareness and trust in yourself, I hope that you will be able to make constructive changes, leading to a more satisfying and meaningful life.
I apply an integrated approach to counselling, meaning that I combine different but complementary counselling methods that have been taken from different models of therapy. These are Person-Centered Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Solution Focused Therapy. Using an integrative approach allows me to be flexible in providing a service that suits you and your situation.
Counselling today comes in many forms. Usually, it’s a face to face meeting in a private, safe and comfortable setting, but it’s also not uncommon to find that you can now speak with a counsellor, such as myself over the phone, via video chat or even through email and text messaging. Depending on your specific problem you can see a relationship, drug and alcohol or grief and loss counsellor, just to name a few.
Despite these similarities, there are many differences. The most notable difference would be the training and qualifications. Essentially, both the coaching and counselling industries are unregulated so it’s important to choose a coach or counsellor who has the appropriate training and experience.
Coaching vs counselling… I hope you have more clarity now about the two different helping professions and you will now be able to differentiate whether or not you would be best suited to the services of a coach or a counsellor?
